With Fall semester in full swing, students and the insurance industry had a great opportunity to engage last week at Gamma Iota Sigma's annual conference in Columbus. For industry organizations and conference sponsors, including Insurance Industry Resource Council (IIRC) members Nationwide, Westfield Insurance and Liberty Mutual, the conference was a talent catalyst and offered meaningful connections to the next generation of insurance leaders.

20 Graduates Ready for Great Careers in Insurance

Graduates of the Columbus State Community College insurance certificate program are one step closer to good jobs in the insurance industry.

On June 20, about 70 students, administrators, faculty and family members celebrated the participants’ graduation from Columbus State’s Certificate of Foundations in Insurance pilot program. The event marked a turning point for the tradtitional students, career changers and veterans who completed the program.

In 2012 there was not a single Ohio college graduate who received a degree in insurance. It was a troubling fact for an industry, which is considered an economic pillar for the state of Ohio. Insurance employs over 100,000 Ohioans and contributes billions to the state’s gross domestic product. The industry worked around this challenge by recruiting insurance talent from colleges in other states and by hiring students from related disciplines in Ohio.

Clark State Will Offer Online Insurance Degree and Certificate

Clark State Community College is taking the lead in bridging the insurance industry employment gap. A 2013 study by the Insurance Industry Resource Council identified that Ohio insurance companies will need to hire 26,000 new workers by 2020. Currently, Clark State is the only college in Ohio to offer an associate degree in Business Management with an Insurance Option. This fall Clark State will become the first college in Ohio to offer an online Insurance Certificate that can be completed with a series of six online courses, each just eight-weeks long. Students can finish the entire certificate program in as little as 24 weeks.

26,000 Ohio Insurance Jobs Need to Be Filled by 2020

The Ohio insurance industry needs 26,000 skilled workers by 2020, according to a new workforce study cited by Lt. Governor Mary Taylor during today’s Insuring Ohio Futures announcement at Nationwide Arena in Columbus.
